Review – BAM Sustainable Bamboo Clothing and Activewear

Cycle clothing is a long way behind the curve in terms of sustainability; unfortunately, companies within the industry have been slow to recognise the value of natural fabrics that are sustainably sourced. Bamboo clothing is one of the most sustainable clothing choices on the planet, and the range of activewear from the brand BAM Bamboo Clothing has fast become my go-to choice for off-the-bike wear.

Beautifully soft, stretchy, breathable and moisture wicking—bamboo trumps most synthetic fabrics in terms of its technical performance. In addition, unlike some natural fabrics like pure merino wool, bamboo is also impressively durable and able to stand up to the rigours of outdoor pursuits and adventures.

This year, I have been testing a selection of products from the BAM Bamboo Clothing range:

  • Fordsland Bamboo Joggers
  • Origin Quarter Zip Bamboo Knit
  • Bamboo Training T-Shirt
  • Rowtor Waterproof Recycled Jacket

I put together this outfit as the ultimate ‘comfort’ kit for trekking and walking through the cooler months; with adaptability enough that I would also be able to use the tee and lightweight waterproof in the summer.

Fordsland Bamboo Joggers

These are classic jogging pants with soft ankle cuffs and an elasticated drawstring waist. Made from a special super-stretchy blend of bamboo and organic cotton, they have a beautifully soft and comfortable brushed fleece lining. Useful concealed zipper pockets on each side also offer storage for valuables.

I have used the Fordsland Joggers for lounging around the house, for day-long hiking adventures, and for active gym sessions. The breathable and high stretch natural fabric makes them as versatile and durable as any synthetic jogging bottoms I have owned, and far more comfortable and satisfying to wear.

Origin Quarter Zip Bamboo Knit Pullover

Kitting up in sustainable clothing does not have to mean sweatpants and hoodies, BAM Bamboo Clothing also make some classic smart-casual knitwear, such as the Origin Quarter Zip Bamboo Knit.

This is a classic quarter zip, with a rib stand collar that has a contrast inner—revealed when the zip is open. Made from a 60:40 Merino Wool – Bamboo blend, it is super soft, breathable, warm and moisture-wicking. There is no itch with this wool blend.

The chest, hem, and cuffs of the Origin Quarter Zip are ribbed for comfort and style, while the contrast stripes on the hem give a classic athletic style. Perfect for hiking in the hills or wearing in a modern boardroom.

Bamboo Training T-Shirt

Bamboo is a natural ‘technical’ fabric, and this training tee has become my preferred for those workouts and activities where previously I might have worn a polyester technical tee.

The Training T-Shirt is super soft, stretchy, feels light and airy, and washes well. It is an excellent choice for chilling out or working up a sweat.

Rowtor Waterproof Recycled Jacket

It would be difficult to make a rain jacket out of bamboo, but BAM have had a good go at making one that is sustainable and as recyclable as possible. The Rowtor Waterproof Jacket is a lightweight and breathable rain jacket; made from 98 percent recycled material, it is still a top performer out on the trails.

The Rowtor is a fully featured performance shell jacket; with a slim-fit cut, adjustable hood and hem, two zippered front pockets, and a 10k/10k waterproof/breathability rating. It is a single layer waterproof material, which helps keep weight down compared to a lined jacket, and the waterproof coating (which normally contain PFCs that are damaging for marine life) is state-of-the-art TEFLON™ Econ Elite.

What impressed me most with the Rowtor jacket is that is feels and performs like a top of the range ‘non-eco’ jacket; demonstrating that sustainability, recyclability, and style do not have to mean reduced functionality. The fabric performs well in downpours and feels impressively robust.

The Rowtor Waterproof Jacket has been stashed in my hiking rucksack or worn on top of windy and wet hilltops for many great local adventures over the past few months.

The sustainable clothing range from BAM Bamboo Clothing continues to impress me. It is more comfortable, smarter, and far more sustainable than the majority of big-name technical garments on the market. Whether you are chilling out at home or hiking in the hills, the BAM range has got a garment that will keep you comfortable and help protect the nature around you.
